The Montane Trail 26 & 13 Howgills 10 Course
You have a choice of two trail running races, the Howgills marathon (Trail 26) or the Howgills half marathon (Trail 13). Both the Trail 26 and Trail 13 routes set off climb up towards Winder, around the side of Arant Haw and over to The Calf whereupon the two routes separate.
From The Calf, the Trail 13 route desends Cautley Spout, England’s highest cascade waterfall. From The Calf, the Trail 26 route continues along the Howgill Fells and down into Bowderdale. The Trail 26 course continues to Ravenstonedale and then to Harter Fell before joining up with the Trail 13 route at Cross Keys near Cautley Spout. The two routes then follow the river back over to Sedbergh and round the outskirts of the town before heading back to the finish line.
The Howgills trail running event has between 700m to 1000m of climbing dependant on which trail race you choose there is something to test even the most hardened of trail runners. The descents are grassy and can get quite slippy which makes for a technical but fun race.
The Howgills trail running course will be fully signed with bright yellow directional signs and red flags together with our famous “motivational quotes” to keep you going. This year we will also have mile markers and Strava segment signs along the course.
There will be 2 feeding stations/checkpoints on the course. The first feed stop on the Trail 26 route is in Ravenstonedale and the second feed stop is at Cross Keys which falls on both the Trail 26 and Trail 13 routes.
In addition to the Trail 26 trail race there will be a free Trail Kidz 1k trail running event for children which will take place at 9am. There will be medals for all finishers. You will have enough time to run with your children before taking part in the main event! There is no online registration for this event. You will need to register your child(ren) on the day at the Trail Kidz Registration Table.
