Starting and finishing at Landing Point, Coniston Hall near Coniston village, the 10km Coniston Trail Run, 15km Coniston Trail Race and 15km Coniston Trail Challenge follow circuits along well marked and marshalled footpaths and bridleways, taking in panoramic views of Lake Coniston and the surrounding peaks of the Old Man, Swirl How, Wetherlam and Dow Crags.

Brief History of Running
Competitive races are thought to have at first started (as with many sports) with the Ancient Greeks, though many other traces link it to the Egyptians, parts of Asia and many other parts of Africa. One of the earliest recorded event is from 1829 BCE at an Irish festival honouring the goddess Tailtiu in a series of sporting events known as the Tailteann Games. A thousand years later in 776 BCE, we have the first record of the Olympics in Greece, and this is likely where many forms of runs and marathons have their origins.
Since then many different type of events have come about – through the Olympic Games are still probably the most famous. Throughout the world events are held all the time from simple small 5k runs to enormous 26 mile sprints like the London Marathon.
How to get started in running events
Luckily it is one of the easiest sports to get in to – you just need to start moving! Starting off with small jogs and sprints is the best way to get started and then you can slowly start to increase distance to build yourself up to bigger and better runs. I’d suggest started off with something like a 5K as this is not too challenging but long enough for you to get a real sense for what is involved in the sport. Once you get started you will quickly see there is a lot more to taking on a run than simply getting out there and jogging. If you are looking to get serious then you may want to start investing in some good gear – a good pair of running trainers is the best place to start. You can also invest in a lot of other running specific clothing too though be warned things can start to get expensive.

The Lakeland Trails - Coniston Course
Underfoot conditions are generally good for those used to off road running, although there is one short 200m section after approx 4km on the 15km routes which only agile mountain goats will be able to run!
A carnival atmosphere is guaranteed for both spectators and competitors, with live music, race commentary, food and drink all available at the start and finish. So, whether you're new to trail running, an experienced athlete, or simply looking for an unforgettable day out in the Lake District, a family-friendly, festival atmosphere and some amazing trail running awaits you!
10km Coniston Trail Run (£TBC) - Start 11.00am
A shorter distance event for everyone over the age of 16, on a well marked and marshalled course, with graded runnable climbs and descents. There is a time limit of 2 hours and to enter you must be at least 16 years old.
15km Coniston Trail Challenge (£TBC) - Start 13.00pm
An event for less competitive runners and fitness walkers. If you want to take it easy and enjoy the views, this is the one for you. There is a time limit of 3 hours for the Challenge and to enter you must be at least 18 years old.
15km Coniston Trail Race (£TBC) - Start 14.00pm
For the competitive runner, a well marked and marshalled course with fast, graded runnable climbs and descents for those used to off road running. There is a time limit of 2 hours for the Race and to enter you must be at least 18 years old.
Children's Fun Trails (£3) - Start 12.30 (Enter on the day)
Fun runs for all abilities of children (under 12) within the finishing arena. No entry limit for children and they can enter on the day.
