Hopton Court Trail Run Winter 5K, 10K & Half Marathon

A challenging Winter trail run set in the stunning surroundings of the Hopton Court Estate in South Shropshire. An exclusive opportunity to experience this private, multi terrain route through woodland, across fields and over streams. 

Registration and run briefing:

  • Collect your timing chip and number on the morning of the run from 08:00.
  • Run briefing for the half marathon at 09.15 ready for a 09.30 start.
  • Run briefing for the 5K and 10K is 09.45 ready for a 10.00 start.

Run route:

  • Half marathon - 4 laps (min age 17)
  • 10K - 2 laps (min age 15)
  • 5K - 1 lap (min age 11)

The route is marked out with arrows and marshals will be in key areas. The terrain is a mixture of fields, woodland and hard standing footpaths. There is also a shallow water crossing with an option to either run through it or over it! The route in its most basic form is undulating with some challenging areas as well as some downhill breathers.

Run instructions

  • You will receive your timing chip and run number at registration.
  • Your run number must be visible on your front.
  • There will be a water station at the 5k lap point on the course. Please do not discard any plastic bottles or gel wrappers etc on the route. There is more water available at the finish line.
  • At the finish stretch, cool down and relax! There will be refreshments available to purchase in the Coach House after the finish line. Enjoy a beer, soft drink or snack to celebrate.
  • Everybody receives a medal and an official time.
  • Full results will be announced on our Facebook page within 48 hours.

Brief History of Running

Competitive races are thought to have at first started (as with many sports) with the Ancient Greeks, though many other traces link it to the Egyptians, parts of Asia and many other parts of Africa. One of the earliest recorded event is from 1829 BCE at an Irish festival honouring the goddess Tailtiu in a series of sporting events known as the Tailteann Games. A thousand years later in 776 BCE, we have the first record of the Olympics in Greece, and this is likely where many forms of runs and marathons have their origins.

Since then many different type of events have come about – through the Olympic Games are still probably the most famous. Throughout the world events are held all the time from simple small 5k runs to enormous 26 mile sprints like the London Marathon.


How to get started in running events

Luckily it is one of the easiest sports to get in to – you just need to start moving! Starting off with small jogs and sprints is the best way to get started and then you can slowly start to increase distance to build yourself up to bigger and better runs. I’d suggest started off with something like a 5K as this is not too challenging but long enough for you to get a real sense for what is involved in the sport. Once you get started you will quickly see there is a lot more to taking on a run than simply getting out there and jogging. If you are looking to get serious then you may want to start investing in some good gear – a good pair of running trainers is the best place to start. You can also invest in a lot of other running specific clothing too though be warned things can start to get expensive.
