After taking on a few rolling hills early on to warm your legs up, the routes split along the River Towy, which curves and darts through some of the most magical scenery in south Wales. The short route heads west, along a broad river valley, and finds flatter terrain while giving the opportunity to keep an eye out for soaring Red Kites birds.
Standard and Epic routes head east from here, running between the River Towy and the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. After crossing the river, the routes heads up toward Talley Abbey, the ruins of a former White Canons monastery.
The Epic route then bears towards Lampeter, past the Dolaucothi Gold Mines – used from Roman times right up until the 20th century, set amid wooded hillsides overlooking the beautiful Cothi Valley. With a few more climbs the route loops at Lampeter heading back south to rejoin the Standard route and head towards the historic Brechfa Forest.
Following the Afan Gorlech river, a magnificent light so often darts through lush fir trees, leaving you to ride along roads with perfect swooping bends, hardly any traffic and the idyllic forest setting.
This is a sportive that offers you the best the ‘Garden of Wales’ has to offer, with ancient pathways, river valleys, hills, hidden forests and more. All routes give you a chance to get out and discover the rich and dramatic history of the area, while also proving to be a testing day out on two wheels.
